What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
After writing my first book, “Little Cat Needs Space,” I had several fantastic conversations “what if” conversations with elementary students. One student got very excited about the idea of Mr. Fuzzby taking over the storyline and another student thought Little Cat and Mr. Fuzzby should pair up. I decided the two storylines together could create a nice tension and illustrate a common connection: Feeling Left Out. I say “feeling” because Little Cat— like all of us— has a choice how she responds to that feeling. No one should ever stay feeling left out… but within that we all have choices that we can make.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I am a huge animal lover… cats are probably my favorite. So it was no surprise to family and friends that my characters were animals. My characters were based primarily off our own house pets. Little Cat is actually modeled after our black rotund house cat, Mia who befriended our old harlequin colored Great Dane, Rembrandt. Mr. Fuzzby is based off my favorite stuffed animal as a kid— a pink cat called “Pinky.” Most children have a favorite toy or stuffed animal they carried with them everywhere… even to college, right? I wanted my characters be be child-like and quirky in their own ways. Just like (most of) us!
